Take Control of your Cosmetic Drawer for Healthier Skin

Guest Blogger: Fonda Jo Franyovich, Finishes by Fonda Jo

Now, with so much time on our hands and feeling out of control, we can find calm through order! Starting with something small and manageable, but so important is your cosmetic drawer. This "drawer" can be hiding some of the most pore-clogging ingredients. Decluttering this area will give you more space as well as help to keep your skin clear.

Let's check the dried out mascaras and half-empty eye shadow palettes. Let's also take a look at the foundations and blushers that turned out to be too dark or too light. They're taking up needed space.

If you checked the ingredients, you might find that many of them contain comedogenic ingredients (components often included in formulas to enhance the consistency or extend shelf life). These can lead to breakouts and/or impactions and can usually be found as raised bumps in patches over the cheeks, chin, and forehead.

Dr. James Fulton (dermatologist and bio-chemist) developed a comedogenic scale that test and rank, on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the most comedogenic).

Here is the top offending ingredients you should be looking for when deciding the comedogenicity of your products:

  • Isopropyl Myristate (5)
  • Myristyl Myristate (5)
  • Laureth-4 (5)
  • Oleth-3 (5)
  • Cocoa Butter/Oil (4)
  • Acetylated lanolin (4)
  • Lauric Acid (4)
  • Isopropyl Palmitate (4)

(5 is the most comedogenic and should be avoided)
